This short Froebel Trust film explores how a Froebelian approach connects with the new curriculum for Wales. Produced in October 2023.

A 5 minute Froebel Trust film. Produced in October 2023.

Putting Froebel's principles into practice in Wales

The film introduces Tŷ Froebel (Froebel House) which is part of Cardiff Metropolitan University in Wales. It is a play and learning space designed especially for early years educators, student teachers and early years and primary education students to learn about Froebel’s principles.

Local nursery and primary schools are also able to access the facilities at Tŷ Froebel to get hands-on experience of Froebelian gifts and occupations such as block play, clay, paper folding, woodwork, sewing, gardening and more.

About the research

Researchers Dr Jennie Clement and Sian Sarwar were awarded a Froebel Trust grant to investigate connections between Froebelian principles and new early years curriculum guidance for Wales. They explored the synergies forming between Froebelian principles and the Four Purposes within the new Curriculum for Wales (first published in January 2020):

  • ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

The film evidences the connections between the Welsh curriculum and a Froebelian approach. It shows Froebelian principles being put into practice, involving young children and educators from a local primary school in Cardiff.
