A project developing an approach for positively engaging parents of children with special educational needs in the Froebelian Occupation of woodwork.

Tuffkid Nursery in London supports both mainstream and special needs children with an integrated approach to learning through play. Educators at the setting have been awarded a Froebel Trust Practice Support Grant to further develop woodwork in their inclusive curriculum offer.

Educators at the nursery school have adapted their woodwork area to be inclusive for every child, embedding their woodwork ethos into the staff and pupil infrastructure.

Recognising that some parents/carers of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are reluctant for their child to partake in woodwork, this project aims to partner with parents/ carers to share how the deep learning taking place during woodwork is invaluable, and all children should be given the opportunity to experience it.

Woodwork in action at Tuffkid Nursery

Educators at the setting plan to share information about the benefits of engaging with woodwork with all parents and carers - with a focus on supporting parents and carer son children with SEND in particular.

"Children thrive when their network of support works together and there is consistency. Strengthening this network will allow SEND children to partake in the magic that is woodwork. The lessons learned will pave a lifelong path of curiosity, exploration and satisfaction." Project leader at Tuffkid Nursery

A final report on the project is due in Summer 2025.

Woodwork
